Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: Unlocking Personal Growth and Transformation
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is increasingly used to treat conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain, especially in cases where traditional therapies have been less effective.
KAP is a holistic evidence based therapeutic approach where ketamine is used alongside psychotherapy to encourage more frequent breakthroughs and longer-lasting symptom relief. In this model, I handle the psychotherapy component, while Journey Clinical’s medical team manages all medical aspects—determining eligibility, creating a personalized treatment plan, prescribing ketamine, and monitoring outcomes. Below, you’ll find more information to help you decide if KAP is a good fit for you.
I am pleased to offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with Journey Clinical.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a safe, legal, and effective medication that has been successfully used to treat various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It offers rapid-acting antidepressant and mood-lifting effects, often beginning within 1–2 hours of treatment and lasting for up to two weeks. This medication blocks the brain’s NMDA receptors and activates AMPA receptors, processes believed to foster new synaptic connections and support neural pathways tied to stress and mood regulation. Ketamine has also shown promise in enhancing neuroplasticity, helping deliver lasting improvement in symptoms.
Ketamine can be administered in several ways—including IV infusions, intramuscular injections, nasal sprays, or sublingual lozenges. In collaboration with Journey Clinical, I exclusively use sublingual lozenges.
How Does Ketamine Feel?
Most patients find ketamine’s effects pleasant, with the experience typically lasting about 45 minutes. During this period, you may feel somewhat detached from your body and notice shifts in perception that can feel expansive. Because motor and verbal skills are temporarily reduced, you will be resting comfortably in a reclined position. When the ketamine’s effects wear off, we’ll spend the rest of the session giving you space to reflect on and discuss your experience.
While it may feel hard to articulate what happened during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are none-the-less clear. Studies have shown that the benefits to mood and neurological growth can last up to two weeks after the Ketamine experience.
How Does Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Work?
-
You schedule an initial evaluation with a clinician from the Journey Clinical medical team via zoom. They will go over your medical and psychiatric history with you, provide education on the treatment and determine if you are eligible for KAP.
If their medical team determines you are eligible for KAP, they’ll develop a personalized Ketamine prescription and outcome monitoring plan for you.
Journey Clinical’s medical staff will write your ketamine prescription, and a small amount of oral ketamine will be sent to your home, enough for the first 2 KAP sessions.
Journey Clinical will teach you how to take your vital signs and self-administer the lozenges before our KAP sessions.
-
Once you have been determined eligible for KAP r we will schedule time together for our KAP preparation, dosing and integration sessions. Preparation session(s) will be scheduled just like regular therapy sessions prior to the KAP dosing session. The goal of a preparation session(s) is to align on the process and set intentions for our KAP sessions together.
-
A typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1-3 hours and can take place either in person, or remotely via Telehealth.
During a dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine lozenge either in my office or in your home. You will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to calming music.
Although a KAP dosing session is largely an internal experience, I will be present the entire time to offer support and hold space as needed.
-
Following a dosing session, we will schedule integration sessions to help you process any memories, thoughts, or insights that arose, and prepare for future dosing sessions.
-
After the first KAP session, Journey Clinical’s medical team will schedule follow-up appointments to check your progress and, if needed, refill your ketamine prescription.
The frequency of these follow-ups varies based on your unique treatment plan, with a minimum of one per quarter.
Fee Structure
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is an affordable, accessible modality. Although the medical intake and follow ups are not covered by insurance, they are eligible for out-of-network reimbursement dependent on your plan.
